KT Atom Back Wing – Carbon Surf Tail for Intuitive Manoeuvrability and Control
The KT Atom Surf Tail is Kane's favourite manoeuvrability-focused stabiliser – built to bring surf-style control, confidence and responsiveness to any foil setup. Designed for riders who prioritise turning, feel and adaptability over maximum glide or top-end speed. Compared to higher-aspect tails like the Pulse, the Atom Surf delivers a more reactive, playful ride while still maintaining strong pitch stability. The carbon construction lets riders size down without losing lift, reducing drag while keeping control smooth and predictable. The Atom Surf Tail works seamlessly across the entire KT foil range, and with proper shimming and spacing can be tuned to pair with other foil systems as well.
Feeling
Atom Surf feels loose, intuitive and instantly reactive. It snaps into tighter turns, delivers a lively, surf-driven character and gives you that connected, confidence-inspiring feel underfoot without sacrificing stability. Pitch response stays smooth and predictable, letting you push harder through carves, landings and surface touches with no surprises – just clean, controlled feedback every time you load it.
Speed
Atom Surf prioritises control, connection and turning feel over outright top-end speed. While it gives up a touch of glide compared to high-aspect race tails, it stays efficient enough for nearly all surf, wing and wake scenarios. For most riders, the added control actually unlocks more usable speed, letting you push harder, ride faster and stay composed in real-world conditions where precision matters more than pure glide.
Design Idea
Control creates performance. Instead of chasing maximum glide or race-tail efficiency, Atom focuses on giving riders a more intuitive, connected feel with the foil. Setups feel shorter, lighter and easier to place through turns, whitewater hits, freestyle moves and landings – everything becomes more reactive without becoming twitchy. On surf-oriented wings like Nomad and Halo, it tightens turning and adds a loose, skate-inspired feel. On faster wings like Solus or Atlas, it boosts manoeuvrability and confidence without overpowering the wing's natural speed and glide.
Shape & Outline
A surf-oriented outline tuned for clean release, smooth pitch response and predictable lift. The tail stays active through turns without adding drag – balancing responsiveness with just the right amount of stability. The result is a crisp, controlled and naturally flowing ride.
Construction Highlights
Geometry: Designed around typical surf-tail angles for a familiar, intuitive balance right out of the box. When switching between tail families or foil systems, riders can fine-tune the shim angle to hit their ideal lift and front-to-back balance. High-aspect tails generally need less angle to create the same lift, while Atom Surf prefers a bit more engagement to maintain its connected, surf-driven feel.
Performance: Optimised for surf feel, freestyle response and confidence in high-impact moments. Keeps pitch steady and predictable, letting you push harder through turns, landings and surface contact without the foil ever feeling nervous or overloaded.
Efficiency: Not a race-focused tail, but stays efficient enough for nearly all surf, wing and wake scenarios. Because you can run a smaller size for the same lift, overall drag drops and the whole setup feels cleaner, quicker and more responsive.
Agility: High agility by design. Quick, reactive and playful – tighter turning radius, faster transitions and a more expressive surf-style ride across disciplines. Shines when instant control and intuitive handling matter more than pure glide.
Construction: Carbon delivers a stiffer, lighter-weight tail compared to composite tails – a sharper, more connected feel on the water. Added stiffness lets you size down without losing lift or pitch control, reducing drag and boosting responsiveness.

Size Selection & Recommended Front Wing Pairings
121 cm² – The most lively and carve-focused option. Sharp, reactive and instantly engaged. Carbon layup lets you run it smaller than non-carbon tails for the same lift. Pairings: Halo 550 Surf + larger Halos for loosest, most reactive feel; Solus 565–775 for cruising and turns; Atlas 570 and 680 for surf-oriented riding; Nomad 700 and 830 surf and cruise.
141 cm² – Balanced daily driver. Keeps the surf-forward Atom character, adds extra stability for choppier water and winging. Pairings: Halo 550–800; Solus 650–1110 cruise; Atlas 570–960; Nomad 700 and 830; Instinct (advanced pairing).
161 cm² – Stability-oriented option: calm, planted, composed. Smooths out speed changes and chop with extra pitch damping. Pairings: Halo 550–950; Solus 930 cruise; Atlas 790–1130; Nomad 830–980.
181 cm² – Maximum pitch damping and forgiveness. Calm, settled ride through speed changes, chop, touchdowns and high-impact moments. Pairings: Halo 950; Atlas 1130 and 1340; Nomad 980 and 1160; Instinct 920–2200 for intermediate cruising.
