Foil Drive Kits – understand the systems, choose correctly
Foil Drive Kits are complete foil assist systems that expand an existing foil setup with an electric drive. They do not differ in their basic concept, but in performance capability, energy reserve and usage profile.
Foil Drive deliberately avoids a one-size-fits-all approach. With three clearly defined system platforms, different gaps between classic foiling, assist foiling and e-foiling are closed.
The three Foil Drive systems at a glance
GEN2 SLIM – minimal assist, pure foil feeling
GEN2 SLIM is the lightest and most compact Foil Drive system. It is designed for riders who want to use assist selectively and only for short periods.
Typical applications:
- prone foiling
- wave foiling
- take-off and relaunch assist
- minimal additional weight
SLIM is ideal for riders who:
- use the motor only occasionally
- want to return quickly to non-motorized foiling
- prefer a very free and unaffected foil feeling
GEN2 MAX – more reserve, more range
GEN2 MAX is designed for larger batteries and higher sustained power. It offers significantly more power and energy reserve than SLIM, making it more versatile.
Typical applications:
- downwind foiling
- longer assist phases
- riders with higher body weight
- hybrid sessions with outbound and return routes
MAX is ideal for riders who:
- use assist regularly
- want to secure longer distances
- seek a balanced ratio of power, weight and range
FUSION – high-power assist & true e-foil feeling
FUSION is the most powerful Foil Drive system and intentionally bridges the gap between classic foil assist and e-foil.
The key difference compared to GEN2 SLIM and GEN2 MAX is the significantly higher power reserve, enabling two distinct usage modes:
- high-power assist
- very powerful take-offs
- long assist phases
- maximum safety in case of fatigue or riding errors
- ideal for larger riders, larger foils or long distances
- e-foil-like riding
- sufficient power for continuous motorized riding with low motor position
- particularly interesting on lakes, flat water or for relaxed cruising
- much closer to classic e-foil feeling than previous Foil Drive systems
FUSION therefore is:
- the first Foil Drive system that also works as a full e-foil alternative
- fully compatible with assist foiling, prone and downwind foiling
FUSION is aimed at riders who:
- need maximum power
- ride very long sessions or distances
- want to intentionally use Foil Drive as an e-foil
Batteries & system combinations
All Foil Drive systems can be combined with different batteries. The battery influences:
- range
- usage duration
- overall weight
The system (SLIM / MAX / FUSION) defines the performance frame, the battery defines the usage focus. Details about battery technology, care, storage and transport are covered in the category “Batteries & Chargers”.
Structure of a Foil Drive Kit – basic principle
A Foil Drive Kit is purely an assist system. Board, foil mast and foil are not included and come from the rider’s existing foil setup.
The system is integrated into this setup and follows the same core logic:
- Foil Drive system body & electronics – connects battery, controller and motor and is mounted in or on the board.
- Foil mast – serves as carrier for the motor, mounted via universal adapter or integrated mast.
- Motor unit – mounted variably on the mast, influencing take-off behavior, assist strength and riding feel.
- Foil – front and rear wings remain freely selectable.
Foil Drive complements an existing foil setup – it does not replace it.
Motor position on the mast – assist or pure foiling
Low motor position
- more continuous thrust
- stable operation
- stronger assist or e-foil character
- useful for long assist phases
High motor position
- motor exits the water quickly
- minimal additional drag
- almost unchanged foil feeling
- ideal for prone and wave foiling
With increasing experience, the motor is typically mounted higher and used only selectively.
Universal adapter vs integrated mast
The choice between universal adapter and integrated mast is independent of the system and applies equally to SLIM, MAX and FUSION.
Universal adapter
- maximum compatibility with existing foil masts
- flexible motor position
- external cable routing along the mast trailing edge
- slightly more drag and turbulence
Integrated mast
- streamlined integrated motor mount
- internal cable routing without external cables at the trailing edge
- reduced drag and cleaner flow
- fixed motor position
- a different mast is required for a different motor height
Many riders start with a universal adapter for flexibility and later switch to an integrated mast once their setup is finalized and maximum efficiency is the goal.
Differences between the Foil Drive Kits
The Foil Drive Kits differ in:
- system platform (SLIM / MAX / FUSION)
- power reserve
- battery options
- adapter or mast solution
Choosing the right system is the most important step for a properly functioning foil assist setup.
FAQs about Foil Drive Kits
SLIM for minimal assist, MAX for more reserve, FUSION for maximum power or e-foil-style use.
No – but with the appropriate motor position, it can feel very similar to an e-foil.
Yes, especially with the FUSION system.
Yes. Foil Drive is modular – when changing systems, only the main unit and batteries are replaced.
Yes – the lower the motor position, the stronger the assist and the more pronounced the e-foil character.
No, but it reduces drag and simplifies the setup.
