Black Project FoilX adjustable – The adjustable SUP foil paddle
The Black Project FoilX is used for downwind, surf and flat-water foiling by Hawaiian foiling pioneers Andrew Gibbons, Gabriella Bella, Jack Ho, Finn Spencer and Jeffrey Spencer. Its low aspect blade outline gives a powerful catch, and the shorter blade promotes faster strokes.
A shallow power scoop and reduced blade volume encourage a higher cadence and explosive paddling – helping you get up on foil with fewer strokes. With extra area in the toe of the blade, a quick, shallow stroke gives you an instant boost to stay on foil between swells. The adjustable version lets you change and experiment with the length.
Moderate 9.5° blade angle
The moderate blade angle gives an easier catch, a smooth entry, a slightly more forgiving feel and more comfort.
Blade technology
A single shallow scoop with extended dihedral edges is optimised for high cadence and high power output and delivers thrust smoothly and in a controlled way. REACT+ Technology (RE+T) with two external carbon plates amplifies blade power, responsiveness and energy return and is tuned to every blade size. Power Ridge (PRT) and Reduced Blade Volume (RBVT) make the blade strong, light and efficient.
X-Flex core & componentisation
The X-Flex high-density CNC foam core is stiffer and more impact resistant and is combined with higher-modulus carbon laminates for more strength, less weight and better flex properties. Thanks to the component system with hot glue assembly, all parts can be swapped or replaced – for fine-tuning or after damage. Black Project offers replacement parts at a reduced price throughout the life of the paddle.
PowerGrip
The award-winning hollow carbon PowerGrip translates every bit of effort into forward motion; the ergonomic shape stays comfortable through long foil sessions.
Choosing the blade size
The size table is a guide – Black Project has already included the upsizing needed for foiling, so choose by weight. On flat water go bigger; in windy conditions, with small foils and in the surf a smaller blade for a higher cadence works better. Less experienced paddlers benefit from a bigger blade, experienced paddlers can use a smaller one.
QUEST carbon shaft
The adjustable shaft is made from Toray 24T carbon (T700 fibres) with a textured natural carbon finish. It comes in 29 mm and 26 mm (slim) diameters – the slim version is easier to grip and less tiring, especially for smaller hands.
FUSION adjustment system
Black Project’s ergonomic FUSION system has a rounded pod shape without sharp edges, an integrated marine-grade brass pin (adjusted via a 2.5 mm stainless steel screw) and Slick Rail Technology: two L-shaped rails give a secure, smooth adjustment that resists sand and salt build-up. Tight tolerances keep the system compact and less prone to water ingress, while the hardened fibreglass-infused plastic components are light and durable.

For foiling, a shorter paddle works best with low-aspect blades. On higher-volume boards or if you like mid-foiling strokes, go 2.5–5 cm (1–2") longer than your height for more reach.
